Mutualisms (Part Two)

Mutualisms is a two-part concert series which explores the relationships between human and algorithmic art through musical performance. On two different dates, four performers will interface sonically with Nick Szydlo, Lindsay Skvarek, and Sean Monaghan’s “Saphotrophic Commune” installation, a multidisciplinary collaboration utilizing ceramics, textiles, and sound to create an algorithmic mushroom forest.

Craft Gathering x Tina Tse Knits wsg Leslie Rogers + Butterfly Costumes AND Lisa Anderson + Art In Bloom Crochet Florals

All artists, crafters and makers welcome to participate in this community gathering facilitated by knitwear specialist Tina Tse.

This gathering features special guest Leslie Rogers, who will instruct participants on how to make butterfly costumes! Those interested may come back on Saturday, September 28 for Leslie's milkweed workshop, in which participants can don their butterfly costumes to forage milkweed in the Detroit Design District/Milwaukee Junction neighborhood around the exhibit.

Floating Quilt Project and Michigan Milkweed History with Leslie Rogers

Learn about Michigan milkweed history, from foraging milkweed for life vests during WWII to processing the floss in Petoskey, as Leslie shares examples of her floating quilt projects that incorporate milkweed. Discuss ways to sustainably and safely forage milkweed before heading out to forage milkweed in the neighborhood - you may even don a monarch butterfly costume! Return to utilize a variety of methods and contraptions to separate floss from seeds and pods.

Join Lisa Shackleford-Anderson for an afternoon of floral crochet! Arts In Bloom is an immersive, large-scale installation soon to grace the historic Strohm Hall at the main branch of the Detroit Public Library.
Participate by crocheting part of the floral installation; learn to crochet; and/or learn how to volunteer with the program.

Come watch and listen as Jeffrey Evergreen creates a live, pattern-based video performance using analog video synthesizers. Jeffrey will spend time with visitors to explain how patterns are being generated, and their relationship to weaving drafts. Guests are welcome to interact and play with the controls to see real-time changes in patterns.

Somatic Sound

Prepare to be enveloped in a cocoon of deep relaxation with this Somatic Sound. Led by Rosemary "RO" Fajardo and Mariko Brenner, we will use our voices, crystal singing bowls, and various other instruments to guide you through a transformative sound experience. Different sound frequencies awaken a deep sense of well-being, like a full day of relaxation at the beach condensed into a 40-minute session. We recommend bringing a yoga mat, blanket, and pillow to ensure your utmost comfort during this immersive sound journey.
