Leslie will share examples of her floating quilt projects and discuss Michigan milkweed history, from foraging milkweed for life vests during WWII to processing the floss in Petoskey. Learn about ways to sustainably and safely forage and process milkweed before heading out to forage milkweed in the neighborhood during the afternoon.

In the afternoon, the group will sustainably forage milkweed from around the neighborhood surrounding the Boyer Campbell Building. (Simultaneously, you may “Be a Goo and Plant Milkweed Seeds” with Melissa Detloff!) Monarch butterfly costumes will be available for those who wish to wear them while foraging — you may be included in a short film if you choose to!

Upon returning, you’ll learn how to use a variety of methods and contraptions to separate floss from seeds and pods.
